Braveheart and Apocalypto are well-paced, often visually told, stories, especially for their respective lengths. When it comes to other directing choices, Gibson has definitely shown that he can tell an engaging story. Mel's ability to extract strong performances and, I'd expect, an ability to film and frame protagonists, is only more informed by years as a leading man himself. While it's not a rule, I have heard that actors can make very competent directors, and I think this is certainly the case for guys like Gibson, George Clooney (Good Night and Good Luck), and Clint Eastwood. Mel Gibson also received lots of flack for The Passion of the Christ (for the graphic violence) and Apocalypto.Īnd Mel Gibson doesn't seem to be making many movies as of now, as most in the industry are not as accepting of him as he once was (before The Passion and his own personal breakdowns).īut overall, was Mel Gibson a good director, a bad director, or an average director who happened to make good and bad films?

While most seem to not have a problem with him, his critics assert that Mel Gibson's films are full of sadism and overshadow any artistic value that the films may have underneath them. He has acted in lots of famous movies, like Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, and Braveheart (which he also directed), but he is also known as a director (his first directed film was Man without a Face). After rewatching The Passion of the Christ (which I consider to be one of the greatest religious movies ever made), I wanted to ask this question about director Mel Gibson: is he a good director?
